Marmot Researchers Innovate with OnlyFans to Fund Study

In a bid to sustain their long-term investigation of marmots, scientists have ventured into unconventional territory by using the subscription platform OnlyFans. The initiative, known as OnlyMarms, features videos of the charming rodents in their natural habitat without any provocative content, attracting a broad audience.

Professor Daniel Blumstein of UCLA, who heads the Marmot Project in Colorado, conceived the idea following the withdrawal of the National Science Foundation’s financial support. This project, which has been ongoing for over 60 years, is recognized as the world’s second-longest study of individual mammals, providing significant insights into animal behavior and longevity.
Facing the challenge of continuing the project without federal funding, Blumstein drew inspiration from a TV show character who turns to OnlyFans for financial help. He proposed the idea to his team, leading to the creation of OnlyMarms, which has since gained popularity and raised over $6,000.
Through OnlyMarms, viewers can observe marmots in their daily activities while researchers provide commentary on the scientific significance of these behaviors. This engagement not only supports research but also educates the public about the marmots’ ecological importance.
Building upon this success, the researchers have also initiated “Fat Marmot Week,” a competition where people vote for the chubbiest marmot. This initiative, akin to the popular Fat Bear Week, highlights the marmots’ need to gain weight to survive hibernation.
Blumstein emphasized that while the contest is entertaining, it underscores a vital aspect of marmot survival. “It’s fun to root for the chunkiest marmot,” he stated, “but behind the fun and games is a deathly serious competition against nature to pile on fat to survive the long, cold winter.”
Although OnlyMarms may not fully substitute the lost federal funding, it has succeeded in drawing attention to an important scientific endeavor. Through engaging content, these marmots continue to play a role in the ongoing research, one video at a time.
