Community Member Acts to Enhance Safety at Local Bus Stop

Observing a problem can sometimes spark an immediate desire to contribute to a solution. Such was the case for Mark Waters, who was moved to act when he saw women and children navigating a roadside with grass towering over their heads while they waited for a bus.

Waters was passing through the Houston area when he witnessed the perilous scene of the group on the road and then standing at a bus stop obscured by overgrown grass, with cars passing alarmingly close.
“I was going to work and I saw all the little children with the women walking on this major road right here, and the grass as tall as they are, definitely taller than the kids. And then they walked over here and was standing at the bus stop in the high grass with cars still flying by them.”
The image of the risky situation lingered in his mind.
“There’s just no way, as a man, I could let that happen.”
Instead of anticipating action from others, Waters took matters into his own hands by mowing down the grass at the stop.
He acknowledges that other areas in the community face similar conditions and expresses readiness to address these when alerted by the community.
“I’m not asking for help. I’m going to go do it myself because it’s a need,” he said.
The motivation behind his actions is clear.
“Our job is to protect the women and the children, and that’s what I’m going to do.”
Waters’ initiative serves as a reminder that individual action can catalyze change without necessitating large-scale operations or complex strategies. It often begins with one person recognizing an issue and deciding to act.
