A Father’s Brush with Lightning and His Son’s Heartwarming Gesture

Casey Pettus, a contractor from St. George, Utah, experienced a life-altering event on a Utah highway when his truck was struck by lightning. Fortunately, Pettus emerged from the incident unscathed, but the real story unfolded later that evening at home with his family.
Pettus was en route to Cedar City, dealing with a slow puncture in one of his rear tires. Despite adverse weather conditions on Interstate 15, he intended to reach a nearby tire shop before addressing the issue. While on the phone with his brother, urging him to pull over, Pettus experienced an unexpected jolt. “I was like, no, I can make it to the tire store,” he recalled. “Then, just as we’re talking… boom! I just get rocked.”
For a moment, Pettus was bewildered by the turn of events. “It took me a few seconds to realize, holy crap, I just got struck by lightning.” The truck immediately lost all electrical power, and without power steering, Pettus skillfully maneuvered it to the highway shoulder amid heavy rain. The dashboard soon began emitting smoke, compelling Pettus to abandon the vehicle with only his phone, wallet, and keys, leaving behind valuable work tools.
Within minutes, the truck was engulfed in flames, an event captured in a video that surprised many viewers. However, Pettus asserted that the vehicle shielded him from harm during the lightning strike. “I did not get shocked. I did not get hurt. I did not get harmed,” he stated.
The tools essential for his contracting business perished in the fire. “They’re all gone,” reported Pettus. The loss loomed large until his return home, where an unexpected act of kindness turned the day’s misfortune on its head.
As Pettus sat with his family, his 9-year-old son approached with a stack of cash. The boy had diligently saved for a dirt bike by assisting neighbors with their trash cans. Instead of pursuing his goal, he offered his savings to Pettus to replace the lost tools.
“I was so touched,” Pettus said through tears. “He’s like, ‘Here, Dad. You could have this to replace your tools,’ and I just, in that moment, I’d never felt so loved. I felt so much joy for my little man and what he was willing to give up.”
Pettus gently refused the offer, explaining that insurance would compensate for the loss. Yet, his son’s gesture transcended any material possession. Reflecting on the day’s emotional rollercoaster, Pettus noted that such moments of pure love and generosity are truly significant. “In the midst of the chaos and the crazy stories and the very real dramatic things that happen to us in life, there are those sweet souls that can instantly bring light and joy into your life,” he said. “He’s one of them, and that was a moment that we had.”
