As Friday began, just before 1 a.m., Kelly was awakened by the relentless barking of her 3 and a half year old poodle. Initially attempting to calm him, she soon realized something was seriously wrong.

“He comes to my bed, goes back and forth, comes on my bed, and I said, ‘Oh my God, what, what?'” Kelly recounted.

Upon discovering smoke filling her home, she quickly took Squilliam and went to investigate.

“I was like, ‘oh my God, it’s a fire,'” she explained. “I run, and it was in the living room, the house already in flames.”

Firefighters arrived at the scene on Elm Street to find the fire rapidly engulfing the house, as stated by West Milford Fire Marshal Michael Moscatello. The fire resulted in the complete destruction of Kelly’s home and belongings.

Despite the loss, Kelly treasures the safety of herself and Squilliam above all else.

“The best of the best. He’s my hero, my angel,” she expressed. “He’s the best.”

While the cause of the fire remains undetermined officially, Kelly suspects an extension cord linked to an outdoor refrigerator could be responsible. Although her home was lost, Kelly believes the true treasure is her poodle, whose timely alert saved her life.
