In a remarkable display of bravery, neighbors in England banded together to save an 87-year-old woman, Phyllis Day, from her burning home, highlighting the extraordinary acts that strangers can perform in times of crisis.

Fire erupted in Day’s Wigston, Leicestershire residence late on Thursday night while she was asleep upstairs, unaware of the looming danger due to her Alzheimer’s and having removed her hearing aids. The smoke alarms went unheard as a result.
Outside, neighbors noticed the blaze around 11:30 p.m. and quickly mobilized to gain entry into the home as they awaited the fire department’s arrival.
From afar, Suzanne Wright, Day’s daughter, observed the frightening scene through her mother’s doorbell camera. Demonstrating quick thinking, she used the camera’s two-way intercom to direct the neighbors on how to enter the house.
The neighbors’ actions that followed proved crucial to Day’s survival.
“When I saw them open the door and all step back, I realized that these people had run into a burning building to save my mummy, who was a relative stranger to them,” Wright mentioned to the BBC.
“To not know what bedroom my mum was in and not know that you’re going to be able to get back down the stairs… they’re heroes.”
Among the rescuers were Pav Sarpal, 28, and Stephan Smart, 44.
Sarpal recounted, “It’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life. The flames, the smoke.”
“I went in first, I couldn’t breathe. I said to my partner to get me a towel so I can go upstairs and take her down.”
He described the smoke as choking and dense.
“It was like you were physically getting choked by the smoke. I came down twice to get fresh air and then back up to bring Sue’s mum down.”
Smart expressed his sole focus was on reaching the elderly woman.
“I panicked a little to start with. All I knew was that somebody was upstairs and I had to get up there and get her down as quickly as possible.”
The duo successfully located Day, who was asleep in her bed, and woke her.
“She looked at me like I was going to rob her or something,” Smart humorously remarked. “But I got her out of bed. Pav was next to me and we got her down, slowly, but in time.”
Wright has no doubts about the heroism shown by her neighbors.
“Those people saved my mum’s life, without question,” she affirmed. “My mum would have only had a couple of minutes at most.”
She reflected on the event, noting it had renewed her faith in humanity.
“When people are that amazing, people who barely know each other, the world isn’t all bad.”
