Good Samaritan Rescues Two Girls from Burning Home

Leon Segura, a man passing through an unfamiliar neighborhood, became an unexpected hero. While driving home, he noticed a house in flames and heard desperate cries for help. Without hesitation, he stopped his vehicle and approached the burning residence.
Despite his attempts, Segura found the front door inaccessible due to the intense heat. Looking for another way in, he made his way to the back of the house, where a large glass door stood between him and the screams. In an act of bravery, Segura shattered the glass door with his bare hand, sustaining injuries to his arm and hand.

“I told myself, ‘Lord help me,’ and I knew I had to get those girls out,” he recounted.
Covering his face with a bandana to shield from the smoke, Segura entered the smoke-filled home. Inside, he found two young girls, whom he carried to safety one by one. Just as he rescued the last child, the fire intensified, with the back of the house erupting into flames.
Firefighters arrived shortly after Segura’s heroic rescue, taking charge of the situation. The two girls were airlifted to burn units, and authorities confirmed that Segura’s decisive actions were crucial in saving their lives.
Fort Worth Fire Department spokesperson Craig Trojacek emphasized the importance of Segura’s intervention. “We were here within four minutes, but that four minutes is crucial. You’ve got a house full of kids. That four minutes is everything. I can’t say enough about the actions of Mr. Segura. Those two kids that he pulled out, they’re here because of him.”
Tragically, another child inside the home did not survive, as the blaze had become too severe for further attempts at rescue. In total, seven people resided in the home, including five children. Two adults and one child managed to escape without harm.
After being treated for his injuries, Segura focused on the well-being of the children he saved. Reflecting on his actions, he mentioned, “I’m just really glad that the little girls are OK. That’s really what matters. I have an 18-year-old and a 17-year-old daughter. What if it was one of my kids? I would want somebody to act immediately. It’s the right thing to do.”
