In the town of Enid, the Sloat family found themselves huddled in their cellar as an EF4 tornado obliterated their home. Though they survived the storm, they were trapped, with debris blocking their escape route.

“There was glass shattering, we could hear bricks falling, and our cellar door dented in,” Mary Sloat recounted.

Outside, the storm had left devastation in its wake. The family’s property was annihilated, including the shelter for their goats, Percy and Penny.

“There’s just a concrete slab; we didn’t even find the plywood,” Sloat noted.

Initially fearing the goats had perished, the family was stunned when they heard familiar bleating sounds from above.

“My daughter and I could have sworn that we heard goat noises, and I thought, there’s no way,” Sloat said.

Unbeknownst to the Sloats, Percy and Penny had survived and were atop the debris, marking the spot where rescuers would find them.

The goats caught the attention of rescuers, who quickly identified the location of the family beneath the wreckage.

“He said, when we came around the back of the house, your goats were standing on the pile of bricks, and we were pretty sure that’s probably where the cellar was,” Sloat said.

Thanks to this vital clue, rescue teams were able to dig through the rubble and bring the Sloat family to safety.

As they embark on rebuilding their lives, the family cherishes the unique tale of their rescue.

“On days whenever they’re being ornery and they headbutt me, or they nip at my fingers, I’m going to have to remember this,” Sloat reflected. “I don’t know of anybody else who has a goat story like this.”
