Volunteers Rescue Exhausted Canine from Mountain Trail

In a remarkable display of dedication, six volunteer firefighters spent four and a half hours rescuing a 100-pound dog from a challenging mountain trail. The senior dog had become too exhausted to continue while hiking, prompting an urgent call for help.

While on the Golden Eagle Trail in Pennsylvania’s Tiadaghton State Forest, a hiker, accompanied by his dog Sable, realized his companion needed assistance. Nearly two miles from the trailhead, Sable could not proceed alone, leading the hiker to seek out help.
The Waterville Volunteer Fire Company responded promptly, dispatching six members to the scene. Upon arriving, they carefully placed Sable in a rescue basket. Navigating the steep and unforgiving terrain posed significant challenges, with only two firefighters able to carry the basket at certain points. When the slope allowed, they alternated between all four corners. In particularly steep sections, Sable was gently encouraged to walk a few steps, easing the team’s load.
Firefighter Tiffany Young noted the difficulty of the mission, stating, “It is really steep up in there, and these mountains are kind of unforgiving.” She added, “She was a sweet girl, and she really, really needed us desperately, so we were happy to be there for her.”
Throughout the four-and-a-half-hour ordeal, Sable was kept hydrated and on the cooler parts of the trail whenever possible. This particular rescue was a unique experience for Young, a 30-year veteran of the fire company.
The fire company shared the rescue’s success on Facebook, expressing their commitment not only to local residents but also to their animal companions. Their post emphasized, “We did exactly what we had to do and teamed up to carry this 100-pound sweet girl back to her car so her owner could get her on the road to recovery. We wish you well, sweet girl!”
Sable’s owner later informed Young that the dog is expected to make a full recovery. This rescue operation exemplified the company’s motto, “People Serving People,” highlighting their compassion for all family members, including the four-legged kind.
