Discover Five Unexpected Fairtrade-Certified Products

Five Fairtrade-certified products you didn’t know you could buy

Discover the Growing Impact of Fairtrade Beyond Bananas and Chocolate

When one mentions Fairtrade products, it’s highly likely that we visualize a banana, a bar of chocolate, or perhaps a bag of coffee beans. The popularity of these items is indeed undeniable. Did you know that twenty-five years since Fairtrade-certified bananas first graced supermarket shelves, they now make up one-third of all banana sales in the UK? Moreover, Fairtrade tea is also a key staple in the UK, accounting for 60% of all Fairtrade tea sales.

Yet, the reach of Fairtrade is no longer confined to these basic breakfast essentials. Fairtrade products, identified by a distinctive mark indicating adherence to strict environmental and labour standards, have diversified to encompass a broader range of goods.

According to Kerrey Baker, Managing Director at Shared Interest, an ethical investment organisation, this expansion has been driven by consumers who are increasingly demanding ethical and sustainable products. Consumers now desire transparency in product sourcing, and they want to ensure equity in the supply chain. Fairtrade, in its essence, provides confirmation of these expectations.

It’s worth noting that Shared Interest, funded by investments from everyday individuals, provides loans to small-scale farmers. These loans enable the farmers to develop and expand their business operations, besides assisting in the regulation and management of their cash flows. As Baker puts it, “We’re the original crowdfunder, established in 1990, even before the advent of the internet. Our aim is to bring together people who are keen to make a positive impact – it’s about providing a leg-up, not a hand-out.”

Baker emphasizes that choosing Fairtrade products can bring significant benefits to local communities. The additional Fairtrade premium paid to producers goes towards improving their living conditions and quality of life. For example, some co-operatives that Shared Interest has partnered with have been able to establish shops, mobile phone charging stations, and medical centres with the help of these funds.

So, if you’re keen on making a positive impact through your shopping decisions, why not consider adding some less-familiar Fairtrade products to your shopping list?
