Celebrating the Legacy of a Pioneering Educator in Clarke County
The Clarke County School District (CCSD) recently honored the memory of an esteemed educator whose career spanned over three decades. Mrs. Johnnie Lay Burks, who left an indelible mark on the educational community, passed away on July 23, 2026, after a brief illness.
Burks was a trailblazer in the field of education, being one of the first African-American teachers to integrate a previously all-white school in 1966. Her dedication and leadership continued to shine throughout her career as she took on roles as a teacher, counselor, and mentor within the district.
In 1976, Burks’s expertise and commitment were recognized when she was appointed Director of the Clarke Middle School Guidance Department. Under her leadership, the department gained a reputation for excellence. Her exemplary work was further acknowledged a decade later when she was named Georgia School Counselor of the Year in 1986.
In recognition of her outstanding contributions, CCSD renamed one of its elementary schools in her honor, now known as Johnnie Lay Burks Elementary School. The district’s statement highlighted her profound impact, noting that she left a legacy of courage, leadership, and inspiration for everyone in the Clarke County School District community.
