After 40 years of anticipation, a Colorado author’s book has unexpectedly soared to bestseller status. Elissa Guralnick, who co-authored a children’s vocabulary book in 1985, witnessed her work, Weighty Words, achieve newfound fame on Amazon’s bestseller list, propelled by a viral TikTok video.

The book, cherished for its engaging method of teaching complex vocabulary through storytelling and wordplay, had always remained under the radar despite a dedicated audience. “It’s a strike of lightning,” Guralnick expressed regarding the sudden success.
The unexpected turn of events was triggered when author Eli McCann posted a TikTok video recalling his first encounter with Weighty Words during his school days. Viewers resonated with his nostalgia, resulting in an immediate surge in popularity. “The response was hilarious and miraculous,” Guralnick remarked. “The book overnight became a bestseller on Amazon. I’m telling you, overnight.”
One story in the book teaches the word “scintillate” by featuring a firefly named Gloriana, who enjoys lighting up the night. Her nocturnal adventures lead to a playful interpretation of the word as “sins till late,” making the vocabulary lesson memorable.
The book’s unexpected popularity prompted a new print run to meet the high demand. For Guralnick, the joy of seeing her book’s success lies in the happiness it has brought to her family. “My kids are delighted, Paul’s kids are delighted,” she shared. “In a way the whole family is getting in on this.”
Co-author Paul Levitt expressed his astonishment, stating, “The number of sales today make me believe in magic.” He also noted that witnessing his children’s excitement over the book’s renewed popularity has been a particularly rewarding aspect of the experience.
