Chef’s Act of Kindness Brings Comfort to Elderly Patron
September 16, 2026
In a touching display of empathy, a Virginia chef made sure an elderly customer was not left stranded when she arrived at his restaurant only to find it was not yet open.
Chef Andrew Griffin of Deep Run Roadhouse in Henrico, Virginia, encountered Miss Duke, an elderly regular patron, when she came to visit a new restaurant branch accompanied by a local senior transportation service. The restaurant, however, was still preparing for its official opening and was not yet operational.
Upon meeting Miss Duke, Griffin engaged with her to explain the situation. To his surprise, she mentioned that she might need to walk back home. Concerned for her wellbeing, Griffin offered her a ride instead.
During the drive, Griffin reflected on his grandmother, pondering her experiences as she aged. “She probably didn’t have food in her refrigerator,” Griffin mused, which prompted him to do more than just provide transport.
Determined to ensure Miss Duke was well cared for, Griffin took an extra step by taking her to a nearby eatery for lunch before safely seeing her home.
This thoughtful act did not go unnoticed. The local news segment, 12 On Your Side, recognized Griffin’s kindness by presenting him with their Acts of Kindness Award, supported by a $300 cash prize and a restaurant gift card.
Paul Hubbard, the owner of Deep Run Roadhouse, expressed his admiration for Griffin’s nature. “I couldn’t be more proud of you,” he stated. “What you did for Miss Duke is just a small piece of what you do for all these guys on a daily basis. It really tells us what kind of character you have and how much you care about your people.”
The incident has highlighted the impact of small acts of kindness and the difference they can make in the lives of others, particularly within the community.
