On February 2, siblings Troy and Kim Rowe arrived at NYU Langone Health in New York for a surgery that would significantly impact their lives. This day was also Troy’s 49th birthday.
Kim was about to donate one of her kidneys to Troy, having been identified as a rare, highly compatible match.
In 2024, a routine medical checkup revealed Troy’s kidneys were failing. As his health deteriorated, he started the process of joining the national transplant waiting list.
The situation became critical in March 2025 after Troy’s nephrologist, Dr. Lionel E. Desroches, reviewed test results at NYU Langone and advised immediate emergency room care.
Diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease due to hypertension, Troy began dialysis and sought a donor from family and friends, finding difficulty due to his B positive blood type.
Kim then offered to help.

Kim, who was a match, expressed her willingness to proceed without hesitation. “Once I found out that I was a match, there was no hesitation at all,” she told People. “I’m just so grateful and blessed that I could do this for him.”
Kim underwent numerous medical tests, including a physical examination, colonoscopy, and mammogram, to ensure the surgery was feasible.
When the procedure coincided with Troy’s birthday, the family viewed it as a meaningful sign. “We took it as a good sign and a blessing,” Kim remarked.
Troy experienced immense relief as his sister willingly agreed to be his donor. “Asking someone to donate an organ to you is not an easy thing,” he commented. “So for her to agree and be a match was the best feeling in the world.”
Post-surgery, both siblings recovered successfully, reuniting for Kim’s birthday the following month.
Months after the transplant, Troy feels revitalized and Kim maintains she would repeat the decision without question. “I can’t say it enough — I wouldn’t change it for the world,” she stated, grateful for being a perfect match.
The event has only deepened the siblings’ bond. “I’ve always looked after my baby brother,” Kim shared. “Seeing the life in his face, it means everything.”
Reflecting on the transformative gift, Troy succinctly captured his gratitude: “She gave me a second chance at life — how can I ever repay that?”
