On February 8, Shyeniqua Wilkins, who was driving with her three children, suffered a seizure. This caused the car to veer off the road into the canal, leaving her unconscious.
Her 8-year-old daughter demonstrated incredible presence of mind by trying to keep her younger siblings safe, holding them above water as she called for assistance.
Their savior came in the form of Casey Curtis, a motorist who witnessed the accident in his rearview mirror. Without hesitation, Curtis returned to the scene.
Leaping into the water, Curtis managed to rescue the children from the car, bringing them to safety on dry land. He then re-entered the water to assist Wilkins, ensuring her head remained above water until emergency services arrived.
Once stabilized and in the hospital, Wilkins had the opportunity to meet her rescuer and extend her heartfelt thanks.
“I’m so thankful and grateful for you. I know it’s because of you and God,” she told Curtis. “You don’t want to be a hero, but hey, I’m sorry—you’re the hero of my life. I just thank God for you now.”
Reflecting on the event, Wilkins is convinced of the critical role Curtis’s timely actions played.
“Just think, if he would have never turned around… Me and my kids would not be breathing right now,” she said.
After several days in intensive care, Wilkins is recuperating, with her children unharmed from the ordeal. The experience has reinforced her faith.
“I’ve always been a believer in God, but I have stopped going to church and stopped talking to him,” she noted. “So, this right here has just opened that back up for me… Everybody doesn’t get a second chance at life, and he gave that to me and my kids.”
For Wilkins, Curtis is no longer just a passerby; he has become integral to her family.
