Despite her young age, Emi recalled important safety lessons her family had instilled in her. She promptly FaceTimed her grandparents, located nearly 700 miles away in Georgia, who then assisted her in contacting emergency services by calling 911.
Throughout the ordeal, Emi stayed close to her mother, offering comfort and reassurance. Speaking about the incident, Wilkie remembered only fragments of the episode, notably her daughter’s soothing gestures. “The only thing I do remember from everything was the fact that she was rubbing my hair,” Wilkie shared. “I could hear briefly, ‘Mommy, it’s gonna be okay.'”
With paramedics en route, Emi faced another challenge: unlocking the door for the responders. Standing on a chair, she diligently worked to reach and unlock the deadbolt, an effort observed and praised by the 911 dispatcher who remarked, “Oh my goodness. She’s doing so good.” Ultimately, Emi succeeded in opening the door.

Upon their arrival, EMT Tim Spurgeon and other responders were directed by Emi to her mother’s location. Spurgeon praised her actions, describing them as “very courageous and very brave.”
In recognition of her bravery, UT Health East Texas honored Emi with a certificate, a teddy bear, and a stethoscope. Her mother, Aidan Wilkie, expressed immense pride, stating, “She is for sure my hero above anything else.”
During the 911 call, Emi was heard asking, “I helped mommy?” Her family assured her, “Yes, you did. You did a huge help for mommy.” Emi’s actions were indeed a testament to her quick thinking and heroism.
