Governor Cooper Announces Winners of NCWorks Awards of Distinction

Helping Parents of Young Children Reenter the Workforce Could Boost NC’s GDP by Up to $7.5 Billion

The Governor’s NCWorks Awards of Distinction were announced by Governor Roy Cooper, highlighting various achievements in workforce development across North Carolina. The awards recognize a youth internship program, two manufacturers, and five individuals for their significant contributions to the state’s workforce initiatives. The honorees were celebrated at a ceremony on November 13, in conjunction with the NCWorks Commission meeting at Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory. These awards underscore the state’s commitment to nurturing a skilled workforce through innovative partnerships and community involvement.

The “OPT-IN” Internship Program of Burke County was honored for its Innovative Partnership, successfully reducing the number of “opportunity youth” in the area by 7%. This program collaborates with local employers to provide paid summer internships, offering both practical experience and classroom instruction. Blum, Inc., of Stanley, was recognized as an Outstanding Employer due to its longstanding commitment to workforce training and community engagement, notably through its Apprenticeship 2000 program. Meanwhile, Loba-Wakol, LLC, of Wadesboro, received the Outstanding Family-Friendly Employer award for its employee-centric policies, including flexible work schedules and community support initiatives.

Individual accolades included Jason Walker of Vilas, who was named Outstanding Adult for his journey from recovery to becoming a Peer Support Specialist, and Lyric Brown of Gastonia, who was recognized as an Outstanding Young Adult for her academic and extracurricular achievements. Sarah Campo of Monroe was honored as an Outstanding Teen for her leadership in community service and environmental conservation projects. Additionally, Cynthia Holloman of Wilkes County received the Wayne Daves Award for her impactful work in workforce development as a career advisor. Brian Holland of Cary was awarded the Bill Ragland Private Sector Award for his contributions to workforce development, particularly in advocacy and outreach efforts.
