Golden and Theriault Clash on Economy, Lobster, and Abortion in Debate

The key moments in the 2nd District debate between Jared Golden and Austin Theriault -Piscataquis Observer

From the economy to lobster and abortion, the initial debate between U.S. Rep. Jared Golden, D-Maine, and state Rep. Austin Theriault, R-Fort Kent, in their 2nd District contest spanned diverse topics Thursday night.

Golden, a Democrat and Marine veteran, and Theriault, a freshman state legislator and ex-NASCAR driver, are vying for undecided votes as the Nov. 5 election nears.

This 2nd District race gained national attention partly because Golden has succeeded in Trump-favored regions. Theriault, endorsed by Trump, led Golden by a slim margin in a recent poll.

Inflation Reduction Act and Lobstering Divides

The debate opened with both candidates claiming independence from party lines.

Golden has said he won’t vote for Trump nor endorse any candidate, while Theriault previously brought up Trump’s endorsement but did so less during the debate.

The discussion turned to the Inflation Reduction Act, noted for climate, tax, and healthcare impacts, which aims to cut emissions and carry economic benefits. Golden voted for it, opposing other spending bills, while Theriault criticized its impact on right whales and lobstermen.

Golden argued he opposes offshore wind and that Maine’s congressional delegation secured a freeze on whale regulations, while Theriault cited “pork” spending concerns.

Abortion Stances Differ

Abortion remains a key issue since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Golden opposed the decision, consistently supporting reproductive rights. Theriault supported overturning Roe but opposed further expansions of Maine’s laws.

Theriault claimed more commonality on abortion issues with Golden, urging focus on critical matters.

Lewiston Mass Shooting Reactions

Golden backed an assault weapon ban after the Oct. 25 Lewiston shooting. Theriault accused Golden of inconsistent stances, as Theriault called for increased mental health investment but lacked specifics.

Golden highlighted Theriault’s opposition to state budget mental health investments.

Tariffs: A Rare Agreement

Both candidates agreed on tariffs to bolster Maine manufacturers. Theriault blamed Democrats for rising costs, while Golden introduced a tariff bill that experts warn could impact jobs.
