In a tragic series of events on the night of December 21, a wrong-way collision on the GA 10 Inner Loop in Athens-Clarke County marked the eighth fatal crash this year. The accident, involving a Kia Seltos driven by a 26-year-old woman from Lawrenceville, resulted in multiple casualties and injuries.
At 12:08 AM, Athens-Clarke County Police received reports of a vehicle traveling against traffic. The Kia Seltos, piloted by the Lawrenceville resident, initially collided with a Mercedes-Benz, followed by a Ford Expedition, and ultimately a Toyota Camry.
The Toyota’s driver, a 25-year-old male from Athens, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, the passenger in the Toyota is currently in critical condition, receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.
After the impact with the Toyota, the Kia came to a stop on the cable barriers and subsequently caught fire. Tragically, the driver of the Kia also succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Her passenger is in critical condition and has been hospitalized.
The drivers in the Mercedes-Benz and Ford Expedition experienced injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
