Sentencing Phase for Colt Gray Underway in Winder School Shooting Case
The legal proceedings for Colt Gray, who has confessed to multiple charges from a school shooting incident at Apalachee High School in September 2024, continue to unfold in superior court. Gray’s guilty plea on 55 counts has set the stage for intense examination of his motivations and actions.
During these proceedings, the prosecution has highlighted Gray’s disturbing interest in infamous mass shooters. Specifically, evidence presented by prosecutors indicates Gray’s admiration for Nikolas Cruz, the perpetrator of the Parkland, Florida shooting. “What kind of type of evidence are we going to start with in talking about the defendant’s idolization of the Parkland shooter?” questioned Prosecutor Patricia Brooks. Investigator Ashley Gilland added, “The first category is listed evidence of obsession, so basically, things that show or prove that he was obsessed, essentially, with the shooter.”
Family members of the victims have been given the chance to speak in court, sharing their personal grief and perspectives. Breanna Schermerhorn, whose son Mason was among the victims, expressed her struggle with resentment, stating, “As much as I have felt that I needed to hold on the hate that I have felt, I know that I can’t. Not only for my own health, but how can I say love like Mason…That’s why I’m choosing to continue to learn from Mason and honor his legacy. I want to be very clear that I do not forgive Mr. Gray.”
Ultimately, the decision now rests with Barrow County Superior Court Judge Nicholas Primm, who must decide whether Gray will face life imprisonment without parole or life with the possibility of parole.
