Allegations of Misuse: License Plate Reader Controversy in Georgia
In a recent press briefing, Senator Raphael Warnock revealed that Georgia has seen the arrest of 20 law enforcement officials for allegedly exploiting automatic license plate readers. These arrests have raised significant concerns about privacy and the potential for abuse of surveillance technology.
An ongoing investigation in Athens highlights the issue, where an Athens-Clarke County Police Department staff member was terminated following accusations of using the Flock system for unauthorized personal purposes.
Senator Warnock has teamed up with Republican Senator Katie Britt from Alabama, urging the Department of Justice to implement strict regulations to prevent such misuse. “Georgians wanna be safe in their communities,” Warnock stated. “Yes, they wanna be safe from crime, but they also wanna be safe from stalking and harassment and they shouldn’t have to choose one or the other.”
The non-profit Institute for Justice has documented over 100 cases of license plate reader misuse, many linked to stalking and non-official activities, further emphasizing the need for regulatory measures.
