Rock Lobsters Set to Debut at Akins Ford Arena Following Permit Approval
Excitement is building as the Rock Lobsters prepare to host their first home game at the Akins Ford Arena, thanks to a newly acquired Temporary Certificate of Occupancy Permit. This development ensures the much-anticipated hockey match against the Mississippi Sea Wolves will proceed as planned this Friday.
In a recent announcement, the Rock Lobsters confirmed their readiness to take the ice, marking their debut at the Akins Ford Arena. The arena, which faced permitting issues last week with the Athens-Clarke County Fire Marshal, had initially disappointed fans by delaying the team’s opening game.
Dubbed the “Clawshank Redemption,” this Friday’s game will feature a special appearance by Athens’ own The B-52s, who will conduct the ceremonial puck drop at 7 pm. The band is also scheduled to perform on Saturday, followed by a Community Grand Opening on Sunday, which will include open skating sessions.
The Akins Ford Arena, constructed using Special Local Option Sales Tax funds, boasts a seating capacity of 8,500, ready to welcome fans to the upcoming events.
As a note of interest, Akins Ford Arena is a financial backer of WUGA.
