Mayor Girtz Discusses New Ordinance on Public Camping Regulations

Mayor Girtz discusses the new right-of-way ordinance

New Ordinance on Public Camping and Foot Traffic to Take Effect in January

The city is preparing to implement a new ordinance targeting public camping and pedestrian pathways, set to take effect early next year. The decision follows the rejection of a previous proposal in August, which aimed to restrict camping in all public spaces and ensure clear pedestrian access on streets and sidewalks.

This week, the Commission approved a revised version of the ordinance. The updated regulation focuses specifically on commercial areas, restricting camping and lying down outside businesses. This strategic move aims to address concerns primarily within the downtown district.

A last-minute amendment delays the ordinance’s enforcement until January 6th, allowing time for adjustments and preparations. In an interview with WUGA’s Havivah Saltz, Mayor Kelly Girtz provided insights into the implications and objectives of the new policy.
