Foster a Pet for Thanksgiving: Athens Initiative Brings Holiday Cheer
As Thanksgiving approaches, the Athens-Clarke County Animal Services is calling on community members to open their homes and hearts to shelter animals. The innovative “Couch Crashers” program offers a special opportunity for these animals to experience the warmth of a home during the holiday season.
The initiative encourages residents to provide temporary care for pets until December 1, allowing animals to escape the confines of the shelter during Thanksgiving. Chandler Hogan, the Volunteer Coordinator, emphasized the dual benefits of this program. “It helps staff out tremendously during the holiday season because even though we’re closed on holidays, the animals still need to be fed and cleaned and taken care of,” Hogan explained.
Through this program, the shelter gains valuable insights into the behavior of stray animals within a home environment. This information is crucial for understanding their needs and finding them permanent homes.
To ensure a smooth experience for the foster families, the shelter provides essential supplies such as food, bedding, and leashes. Those interested in participating in this heartwarming initiative can sign up on the ACCGOV website.
