Firefly Trail Halted: Eminent Domain Concerns in Athens, Georgia

Debate Over Trail Creek Trestle’s Future Intensifies in Athens

The Trail Creek Trestle, famously captured on the back of REM’s Murmur album, stands as a symbol of Athens’ rich history. This iconic structure is part of the old Georgia Railroad, which is now being transformed into the Firefly Trail, a multi-use path that remains incomplete.

A significant three-mile section near Winterville has yet to be developed, as local authorities consider invoking eminent domain to acquire land from local property owners. District 1 Commissioner Patrick Davenport recently proposed delaying the project, citing concerns for the largely elderly landowners who oppose the acquisition of their properties. This proposal has sparked a strong reaction from trail advocates.

Among the supporters is Lauren Blais, chair of the Athens in Motion Commission. In an interview with WUGA’s Emma Auer at Bike Athens, Blais expressed her apprehensions regarding the government’s recent decision.

Efforts to reach Commissioner Patrick Davenport for a statement were unsuccessful.
