Dexter Fisher Elected as New Mayor of Athens
In a closely watched runoff, Athens voters have chosen Dexter Fisher as their new mayor. The race, which pitted County Commissioner Fisher against District 5 Board of Education Member Tim Denson, concluded with Fisher securing 53% of the vote, as per the Georgia Secretary of State’s office data. Fisher and Denson emerged as the final contenders following the May 19 primary, which also featured candidates like Dr. LaKeisha Gantt, Sharon Miller, and Mara Zuniga.
Key Local Races: Clarke County’s New Representatives
Beyond the mayoral race, Clarke County saw significant outcomes in other local contests. In District 5, the Commission race was won by Craig Topple, who faced off against Kimberly Bennet. Meanwhile, Tracy Smith defeated incumbent Ovita Thornton in the District 9 Commission race, marking a notable change in leadership as Thornton was seeking a third term.

In the broader state political landscape, Congressman Mike Collins emerged victorious in the U.S. Senate race, overcoming Derrick Dooley, the candidate endorsed by Governor Brian Kemp. Additionally, Rick Jackson clinched the gubernatorial race, succeeding over Lt. Governor Burt Jones to replace the outgoing Governor Kemp. The contest for the position of Lt. Governor saw Greg Dolezal defeating John Kennedy.
