Georgia Man Succumbs to Injuries Following Officer-Involved Shooting
Levi Long, a 22-year-old resident of Commerce, passed away in the hospital after being shot by police officers during a confrontation. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation reported his death occurred on Sunday, July 26, after he spent several days receiving medical care for his injuries.
The incident unfolded on July 16 when Commerce Police were summoned to a domestic disturbance on Forest Avenue. The emergency call alleged that Long had forced entry into a residence by kicking in the door and threatened those inside, subsequently fleeing the scene.
Officers located Long at approximately 6:45 p.m. at a residence on Orchard Drive. Armed with a screwdriver, Long allegedly advanced towards the officers, disregarding their commands to halt. According to the police, Long charged at them aggressively, prompting two officers to discharge their weapons, hitting Long multiple times. He was then transported to a nearby hospital.
An autopsy will be performed at the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office to further investigate the circumstances surrounding Long’s death.
