Call for Artists: Mural Opportunity at Historic Morton Theatre Lobby

Athens-Clarke County calls for artists and cultural curators

Opportunity for Artists: Mural Project at Historic Morton Theatre

Athens-Clarke County is offering a unique opportunity for artists to leave their mark on the historic Morton Theatre. This initiative seeks to add a vibrant mural to the theater’s lobby, enhancing its cultural significance and celebrating its historical contributions to Athens and the broader Northeast Georgia region.

Artists interested in this project can submit their applications through the Athens-Clarke County website. The Morton Theatre, known as one of the oldest African-American constructed and owned theaters in the United States, serves as a cultural landmark that the new mural will aim to honor and highlight.

The deadline for mural applications is set for February 27 at 5pm. In addition to this project, local residents have the chance to play a more active role in the cultural landscape by applying to join the Athens Cultural Affairs Commission (ACAC). This volunteer-based commission provides recommendations on public art projects to the Mayor and Commission and holds meetings every second Monday of the month at 6pm.

Applicants for the ACAC must reside in Athens-Clarke County, with the application process closing on March 13 at 5pm. By participating in these initiatives, community members can contribute to the ongoing development and appreciation of visual and cultural arts in the area.
