Athens-Clarke County Police officer fired for misusing Flock camera

Officer Dismissed in Athens for Misusing License Plate Reader

In a significant move to uphold integrity within the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, an officer has been terminated for inappropriately using a Flock camera. This incident highlights the importance of ethical conduct in law enforcement technology usage.

An internal probe revealed that Officer Tyler Vaughn engaged in unauthorized searches of his ex-girlfriend’s license plate multiple times over a single week in 2025. The discovery was made after another officer alerted the department to the potential misuse of the automatic license plate reader system. Following the investigation, Chief Jerry Salters swiftly acted to terminate Vaughn’s employment.

Chief Salters expressed his dissatisfaction with the breach, stating, “I am deeply disappointed by Officer Vaughn’s actions. I do not take this incident lightly. The misuse of our ALPR system is a serious violation of the trust placed in our officers, and we will hold those who violate this department’s policies and standards accountable.” He also commended the officer who reported the misconduct, noting that it reflects the department’s expected standards of integrity and professionalism.

To prevent future misconduct, the department has introduced measures to enhance the oversight of the Flock system. Now, only personnel with the rank of supervisor or higher can conduct searches. The department’s policy strictly forbids using the system for personal or non-official purposes.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is currently examining the incident further.

This isn’t the first instance of misuse within the department. In a previous case in August, civilian employee Nick Barker was dismissed for repeatedly searching his ex-wife’s license plates using the Flock system in 2025.
