Athens Mayoral Runoff Debate: Denson vs. Fisher at Morton Theatre

Athens mayoral candidates to participate in runoff debate

Voter Engagement Heightens Ahead of Athens Mayoral Runoff Debate

As the city of Athens anticipates a change in leadership, citizens are encouraged to engage in the democratic process by attending an upcoming debate. This event will feature the two remaining candidates aiming to replace outgoing Mayor Kelly Girtz. Tim Denson, a member of the Board of Education, and Dexter Fisher, a Commissioner, will present their platforms in a runoff debate, orchestrated by AthChat.

The debate’s moderators, Drew Abney and Russell Edwards, aim to elevate awareness of the election’s significance. Edwards emphasized, “Really drives the importance of raising awareness that hey, there is a race, there is a runoff here, we do need people to come back out and vote.” He further noted the correlation between voter turnout and the health of democracy, asserting that the debate plays a crucial role in informing the electorate about the ongoing election.

Beyond general voter awareness, the event is expected to influence the decisions of those who previously supported candidates who did not advance. Edwards pointed out the lingering questions concerning the allegiance of former supporters, stating: “There’s a lot of questions about where the supporters for the candidates that didn’t get through the first round, where are those supporters going to go. Where are Dr. Lakeisha Gantt’s supporters going to go, where are Mara Zuniga’s supporters, where are Pastor Sharon Miller’s supporters going to go? I think that this debate can kind of help crystalize for folks, the choice that we’re faced in this runoff.”

The debate is scheduled for Saturday at 5:30 PM at the historic Morton Theatre. Attendees are welcome to arrive when doors open at 5 PM, and the event is free and accessible to the public.
