Immigration Enforcement in Athens Sparks Community Response
The presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in Athens has sparked widespread discussion and concern among local residents. Reports of ICE activities have circulated online, shared by the Athens Immigrant Rights Coalition and various community members.
Despite these sightings, it remains unclear whether local law enforcement agencies, including the Athens Police Department and Sheriff’s Department, were notified in advance about the ICE operations. The departments have yet to confirm any prior communication from ICE regarding their activities in the area.
In response to the detentions by ICE, the Athens Immigrant Rights Coalition, along with other human rights organizations, is actively seeking donations to assist affected families. These funds are directed towards The Support For Immigrant Families In Crisis (SIFIC), a program designed to provide aid to families facing the challenges of family separation, violence, persecution, financial hardship, or health emergencies.
