Athens-Clarke Mayoral Candidates Clash in Runoff Debate Over Key Issues

Dexter Fisher and Tim Denson disagree over development, homelessness during runoff debate

Mayoral Candidates Debate Development and Homelessness in Athens

In Athens-Clarke County, the race for mayor is heating up as Tim Denson and Dexter Fisher engage in a critical debate. Held on Saturday and organized by the AthChat Podcast hosts, the discussion highlighted contrasting views on pivotal issues.

Both candidates acknowledged the high cost of housing, attributing it to the prevalence of expensive student accommodations. However, their strategies to address the issue diverged significantly. Fisher proposed that the University of Georgia’s initiative to construct more dormitories might alleviate housing expenses, arguing, “More density is not the answer.”

Conversely, Denson championed increased housing density. He reintroduced his idea for a student housing overlay district designed to concentrate high-density student housing near the UGA campus, suggesting that this proximity could provide a more affordable housing solution.

Addressing homelessness was another key topic where both candidates concurred on the need for enhanced funding for emergency shelters. The debate became more contentious when Fisher claimed that homeless individuals were being transported into Athens from neighboring regions. Denson countered, emphasizing that, “They are supposed to be brought here to Athens-Clarke County where we have the services for them.”

Audience members expressed dissatisfaction with the current administration’s handling of affordability, bureaucratic inefficiencies, and policing issues. With the election just two weeks away, voters face a choice between the two candidates’ differing approaches to these pressing concerns.

Advance voting for the runoff will commence on June 8th, with the final election day scheduled for June 16th.
