New Initiative to Reunite Lost Pets with Families Faster
In an effort to streamline the process of reuniting lost pets with their owners, the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government Animal Services Department has introduced a new initiative. This move aims to reduce the long waits often experienced at vet clinics and animal shelters.
Three microchip scanning stations have been installed, allowing individuals who find lost pets to take the first steps in reuniting these animals with their families. This initiative is designed to help the shelter focus its resources on animals requiring care and attention, rather than those simply needing to be returned home.
These microchips, small devices about the size of a grain of rice, are embedded under a pet’s skin and carry a unique identification number. To facilitate this process, scanning stations are now available at multiple locations: the Athens-Clarke County Animal Services, Memorial Park’s dog park, and Southeast Clarke Park’s Wiggley Field dog park.
The station at the county animal shelter is accessible 24/7, while the park locations are open during regular park hours. Moreover, Animal Services will conduct microchip checks and registrations every Sunday throughout October from noon until 3 p.m., further enhancing the chances of lost pets finding their way home.
