Calls for Extended Early Voting Hours Gain Momentum in Athens
As the November midterm elections approach, residents of Athens-Clarke County are voicing their desire for an extension of early voting hours. The county’s Board of Elections is preparing for a significant voter turnout, and community members are advocating for adjustments to better accommodate voters.
During a meeting held on July 7, several Athenians attended to push for a voting schedule that supports both voters and election staff. One advocate, Adam Shirley, proposed that the voting booths remain open until 7:00 PM during the final weekdays of the early voting period. His suggestion aims to enhance accessibility without compromising the safety of the staff involved.
Shirley stated, “It doesn’t have to be staff or the voters, that’s a false choice I think.” His call for extended hours was met with agreement from other attendees who voiced similar concerns. The urgency for a balanced approach comes amid heightened tensions around voting processes, following the seizure of ballots in Fulton County earlier this year.
With the midterms only four months away, the Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections faces increasing pressure to ensure a smooth and fair voting process, addressing both voter access and staff welfare.
