Community Stands United as ICE Activities Rise in Athens
In a proactive response to recent detentions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Athens Immigrant Rights Coalition (AIRC) is taking significant strides to support the local community. According to AIRC, ICE has detained 11 individuals since July 16th, prompting a swift response from the coalition.
Alys Willman, the president of the AIRC Board, emphasized the coalition’s foresight in preparing for these events. “… we knew this was coming two years ago, and now it’s here in our community, and the most important thing we can do right now is to know our neighbors, to keep an eye out. If you are not vulnerable then try to keep an eye out. Ask how your neighbors are doing, see if they need anything,” Willman stated.
Community solidarity has been a beacon during these times, with nearly 200 volunteers stepping up to provide transportation for vulnerable residents to crucial appointments, including those related to healthcare and immigration.
