From Teacher to School Board: A Journey to Improve Education for All

OPINION: I loved serving our students. Now, I want to serve our state.

Many young people face uncertainty about their career paths after high school. Starting a career as a paralegal and then transitioning to project management, the desire to help the community led to a decision to become a teacher. After graduating from Grand Canyon University, began teaching first grade in Deer Valley school district, where personal children now attend.

Teaching revealed firsthand the challenges students and educators encounter. This experience strengthened the commitment to ensure all students have the resources to succeed. However, when a daughter faced developmental issues, leaving the classroom became necessary to provide needed support. Arizona’s large class sizes, with classrooms holding up to 29 students, highlighted a common statewide issue.

Strong public schools are essential for preparing students for future careers, including business, medicine, engineering, and trades. The absence of quality education risks progress in attracting world-class companies and the jobs they bring. This concern led to running for and winning a seat on the Deer Valley school board in 2022.

Efforts to improve the district included donating 200 pairs of shoes to Title I schools and launching a new construction education program to address workforce shortages. Additionally, an Early Head Start program was introduced to reduce childcare costs, and Ann E’s Closet and Pantry was opened to provide clothing and food to the community.

Teacher shortages were nearly eliminated within two years. However, recognizing that more can be done at the state level led to running for LD2 in the State House. Advocacy for legislation that ensures every child has the best opportunity to thrive is a priority.

Support in the upcoming election will help achieve these goals for better educational opportunities.
