Ukrainian Veteran Urges U.S. to Send Weapons, Warns of Larger War

In Scranton visit, Ukrainian Army veterans plead for more American military aid to fight Russia

The ongoing conflict initiated by Russia has left profound scars on Ukraine, with veterans like Mykola Melnyk paying the price with severe injuries. Despite losing both legs, Melnyk is fervently advocating for global attention, highlighting the potential for much greater global repercussions if this conflict is not contained.

At a recent discussion with WVIA News in Scranton, Melnyk, a lieutenant in the Ukrainian army, emphasized the gravity of the situation by drawing parallels to historical conflicts, suggesting that without intervention, the world might experience casualties reminiscent of World War II’s magnitude, where over 400,000 Americans perished.

Appeal for International Support

In a bid to garner support, Melnyk, alongside fellow veterans Denys Haida and Oleh Bonchynskyi, is touring the United States. Their mission is to enlighten the public about the stakes involved if Russia succeeds and to encourage American citizens to urge their government to continue supplying Ukraine with weapons.

Significantly, they are not asking for American troops, but rather, military equipment. “Now, Ukraine needs weapons, only weapons,” Melnyk implores. “Please help us. Help us protect our civilians. Help us protect our children. Help us protect (the) entire democracy (of the) world. Because if you don’t do this, this very simple thing, you must fight in future.”

Origins of the Conflict

While many trace the conflict back to Russia’s 2022 invasion, Melnyk and his colleagues remind audiences that the roots extend to 2014. The unrest began after President Viktor Yanukovych’s decision to favor Russian alliances over European Union integration, triggering the Revolution of Dignity and ultimately resulting in Russia’s annexation of Crimea.

The Alleged ‘Nazi Horde’

Melnyk does not shy away from comparing Russian forces to Nazi Germany, condemning both the military actions and the passive complicity of Russian citizens. He equates their silence to the Germans during Hitler’s regime, ignoring atrocities committed by their own government.

“And now every Russian citizen understands what they do in Ukraine,” Melnyk asserts. “They killed our children. They kidnapped our children. They kill our civilians. You hear about Bucha?” he questions, referencing the massacre where Russian forces allegedly killed hundreds of innocent Ukrainians.

The Relentless Ukrainian Defense

Melnyk and his fellow soldiers argue that with adequate support, the war can be decisively ended. They describe Ukrainians as relentless fighters, with Melnyk stating, “like old, ugly dogs,” they persist. He claims Ukraine boasts the strongest army in Europe, better understanding modern warfare than their Western counterparts.

Highlighting their defensive prowess, he contrasts Poland’s recent defense performance against a Russian drone attack, where they managed to intercept only 20% of the drones, with Ukraine’s daily success rate of 95%.

Rejection of Peace Proposals

The veterans reject President Donald Trump’s proposed peace plan, which suggests ceding Ukrainian territory to Russia. Melnyk firmly states, “No, it’s our land. It’s our country. You must understand. We fight, Ukrainian soldiers fight for three things — the graves of our ancestors, (the) memory of our fallen brothers and future for our children. If we lost, we have not these three things.”

He insists that the only solution is victory, as stopping Russia is insufficient. “We can’t stop them,” Melnyk declares. “We can only win. You must understand Russians (are) maniacs and they never stop … We can fight for you, for freedom … I think American citizens hear us.”
