Senator Warnock Highlights Rising Costs of School Supplies in Georgia
Georgia families are facing increased financial pressure as tariffs introduced during the Trump administration continue to affect the cost of everyday items, including school supplies. U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock has drawn attention to this issue, emphasizing the impact on household budgets.
In a recent press call, Senator Warnock referenced a new report from his office. According to the findings, families in Georgia are expected to spend over $130 per child for fourth grade school supplies alone.
“If you have more than one child, that could be hundreds of dollars,” Warnock stated. He noted that prices for typical school items like colored pencils and lunchboxes have surged by 31% and nearly 27%, respectively, within a year. Other essentials such as index cards, notebooks, and pencils are also experiencing price hikes, a consequence he attributes to the current tariff policy.
In response, Senator Warnock is advocating for legislative measures to alleviate these financial burdens. He is urging fellow lawmakers to pass the American Family Act, which aims to expand the Child Tax Credit. This expansion would provide families with monthly payments of up to $360 for children under six and $300 for those aged six to 17.
Warnock highlighted the significance of these funds, saying, “That is real money in families’ pockets to cover essential costs like school supplies, tutoring, or childcare.” He also cited the temporary expansion of the child tax credit in 2021, which reportedly lifted 165,000 Georgian children and 2.9 million children nationwide out of poverty, significantly reducing the child poverty rate across the U.S.
