Randolph County Considers Library Board Changes Amid Book Controversy

Randolph County Commissioner confirms effort to 'reorganize' library board of trustees

Randolph County Debates Over Library Board Reorganization Following Controversial Book Decision

The ongoing debate in Randolph County over a children’s book about a transgender boy has sparked consideration of a possible overhaul of the library’s board of trustees. This follows a decision made by the board to retain the book, Call Me Max, in the children’s section, despite requests from a community member to remove or relocate it.

Commissioner Lester Rivenbark is contemplating changes to the library board, citing community concerns. “It’s coming just from the wants and the needs of Randolph County,” he stated, emphasizing the safety of children as a key motivator.

Although the issue is not currently on the agenda for the upcoming Monday meeting, there has been speculation fueled by a social media post from Return America, a local religious organization, suggesting that commissioners plan to replace the library board at the November 3 meeting.

This speculation has prompted reactions from both sides of the debate. Commissioner Hope Haywood expressed surprise upon seeing an agenda item titled “Reorganization of the Library Board of Trustees,” but noted the lack of further details. She emphasized the need for a public hearing with a 30-day notice before any such action, highlighting the library’s importance to the community.

“When I asked our board attorney, ‘What is the intention? Is it to do away with the board entirely? Is it to replace the current members?’ The board attorney was not sure,” Haywood explained.

Meanwhile, the county’s Public Information Officer has clarified that the current agenda does not include any action related to the library board. In a statement, she assured that “Any reports or assumptions to the contrary are inaccurate.”

The library trustees’ decision to keep Call Me Max has drawn significant public attention, with local leaders voicing opinions through podcasts and social media. The discussion remains active as the community awaits further developments.
