A tragic incident has sparked an investigation by Madison Police and the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office after a man was discovered dead in the Dane County Jail early Tuesday morning. This event follows closely on the heels of serious felony charges being filed against the deceased.
The deceased, identified by media sources as Jeffrey Endres, 49, from Cottage Grove, was reportedly involved in a fatal incident prior to his death. However, official confirmation of his identity awaits autopsy results, according to a police spokesperson.
In a disturbing series of events, Endres was charged the day before his death with multiple felonies, including homicide. These charges were related to an incident on April 28, where Endres allegedly drove his Chevrolet Traverse into a family, resulting in the death of 41-year-old Kami Hansen and the family dog. Injuries were also sustained by Paul Hansen and their 13-year-old son.
Alleged Motive Behind the Tragic Incident
The criminal complaint revealed that Endres, a neighbor and once a close friend to the Hansen family, drove into them after learning about allegations of a sensitive crime involving children from both families. Records from this investigation were reportedly received by Endres just hours before the crash.
Paul Hansen expressed to police his belief that the incident was linked to these allegations. Endres faced charges of first-degree intentional homicide, attempted homicide, and animal mistreatment, with bail set at $1 million. A conviction could have resulted in a life sentence.
Witness Accounts of the Crash
Conflicting accounts emerged regarding the crash’s circumstances. Endres claimed he lost control of his vehicle, but witnesses reported seeing the SUV accelerate intentionally towards the family. A neighbor and an Uber driver provided statements that suggested a deliberate act, with the vehicle reportedly reaching speeds of 60 mph in a 25 mph zone.
Ongoing Investigation into Jail Death
The cause of Endres’ death remains undetermined. He was found unresponsive in his cell shortly before 6 a.m., as detailed in a news release from the sheriff’s office. Efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
In line with policy, the Madison Police Department is leading the investigation into the in-custody death. Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett emphasized the seriousness with which such incidents are treated, stating, “Our deepest condolences are extended to the person’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
