The actions of a high school art teacher in Williamsport have raised significant concerns among students and authorities alike. Joshua M. Larson, 47, allegedly engaged in inappropriate conduct with several female students, leading to his arrest and suspension from his teaching duties.
The Allegations and Charges
Lycoming County Detective Loretta A. Badger has charged Larson with several offenses, including institutional sexual assault and endangering the welfare of children. According to an affidavit, Larson attempted to form closer relationships with female students by gifting them coral and making them feel uncomfortable with his behavior.
Larson’s actions, such as moving a student’s desk closer to his and making personal remarks, have been described as inappropriate. He reportedly told one student, “I was just under water thinking about you girls, so I grabbed these,” when giving her coral.
Due to these reports, the school district suspended Larson without pay on March 11, and he was subsequently jailed without bail.
Multiple Reports Emerge
Following the initial report, Detective Badger received six additional reports from a state hotline. In total, 10 students were interviewed, with five cases forming the basis for the charges against Larson.
Larson allegedly told one student he loved her, moved her desk to facilitate interaction, and engaged in unwanted physical contact. He also offered students snacks, candy, and invitations to his apartment, further making them uncomfortable.
Secretive Gifts and Personal Interactions
The affidavit reveals that Larson asked a student to keep the coral gifts a secret to prevent jealousy among others. He also made remarks like, “In all honesty, you’re the only reason I’m still alive right now,” to one of the students.
Reports indicate that he frequently exempted a victim from assignments and expressed affection, saying, “Don’t worry girls, I got money,” while offering to get them anything they desired.
Inappropriate Conversations and Contact
Larson reportedly shared personal details about his life and divorce with a student, often standing close or leaning over her desk. He complimented her artwork, stating, “Everything that I say to you is a compliment and it’s just because I love you so much, I just love you.”
Another student reported that Larson pressured her to show personal photographs, leading to her avoiding his classes.
Further Incidents of Unwelcome Behavior
Another student reported Larson’s unwanted contact, describing how he rubbed her arm and took her phone to listen to music in the hallway. His behavior made students uncomfortable, prompting them to avoid his class or study hall.
Larson’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 4 at 2 p.m.
