Health Officials Stress the Importance of Vaccination as School Year Approaches
As the new school year draws near, public health authorities are emphasizing the need for students in Washoe County to receive necessary immunizations. These vaccinations are mandatory for children entering kindergarten, seventh grade, and their final year of high school. The aim is to protect students from contagious diseases.
Local healthcare providers are stepping up efforts to help students meet these requirements. Northern Nevada Public Health, for instance, has planned two vaccination events in August to facilitate this process. More details can be found here.
Victoria Nicolson, a public health nurse, underscores the risks associated with school environments. “This is a congregation setting where there’s a lot of individuals coming from multiple locations, and it’s a setting that is easily shared space,” Nicolson noted. “Not just your water bottle and shared space with your pencil, but sharing those germs that people have as well.”
To accommodate families, Northern Nevada Public Health is accepting walk-ins, although making an appointment is recommended for a smoother experience.
In addition to Northern Nevada Public Health, other organizations such as Catholic Charities and the Community Health Alliance are organizing back-to-school vaccination clinics.
These initiatives are offering free vaccinations for children who lack insurance, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to be protected as they return to school.
