Guilford County Schools Enhance Kindergarten Transition Efforts
In an effort to better prepare young learners for their first step into formal education, Guilford County Schools is enhancing its support system for families and students moving into kindergarten this year.
According to district officials, approximately two-thirds of the new kindergarten cohort did not have the benefit of preschool education within the district. Instead, these children might have been part of childcare programs or received home care from their parents.
Amy Geer, the Early Learning Director for the district, emphasizes the importance of forging early connections with families. Geer states, “Because the groundwork has already been laid through our intentional family touchpoints, a sense of belonging comes a little more easily for children and their families.”
This initiative has already seen the district host two “Discover Kindergarten” events, engaging with over 1,600 participants. These events featured mock classrooms set up in local children’s museums, offering families a glimpse into what to expect and providing information on kindergarten registration.
Moreover, starting this month, 14 schools within the district will introduce designated kindergarten transition specialists. These specialists are tasked with visiting childcare centers to disseminate information about Guilford County Schools (GCS) and to coordinate family engagement activities throughout the academic year.
