With Jackson County’s decision to exit the Fontana Regional Library system, Grace Powell is set to take the reins as the new library director, marking a significant shift for the county’s library services.
During a closed session on February 17, the Jackson County commissioners appointed Powell as the library director with a 4-1 vote, concluding an extensive search lasting nearly two months.
This decision follows the unexpected resignation of former director Tracy Fitzmaurice, who stepped down in late January from her role with both the county and the FRL system, according to Smoky Mountain News.
The move away from the regional system, which encompasses six libraries across Swain, Jackson, and Macon counties, was initiated by a 2025 vote from Jackson County commissioners. Their decision stemmed from concerns over LGBTQ displays, sex education materials, and certain library policies, as noted in a 2025 report.
Powell expressed her enthusiasm for the new role, stating, “I am excited for this opportunity to serve the people of Jackson County. Meeting the varying needs of library patrons and encouraging the love of reading are passions of mine, and I sincerely appreciate the support of the commissioners to help our community.”
She is scheduled to begin part-time duties with the county library system next month, before assuming the full-time director role on June 1, as confirmed by county commissioner chairman Mark Letson. Powell will take over from Fitzmaurice, who has been a prominent figure in the local library scene since 1992.
Mark Letson commented on Powell’s appointment, emphasizing her community involvement: “She’s not just engaged with the kids, but with the community. She’s very thorough in her planning process and extracurricular activities with children and hopefully that transitions into programming for adults as well. It just really just sets her apart with how she’s going to manage this library and lead us into the future.”
Holding a master’s degree in library science from Eastern Carolina University, Powell currently serves as the librarian at Scotts Creek School in Sylva.
