Each May, Public Square in Wilkes-Barre transforms into a lively hub of artistic expression as the Fine Arts Fiesta unfolds. This four-day festival, now in its 70th year, showcases the rich cultural tapestry of the Diamond City.
John Krupa from Hanover Township appreciates how the event highlights the city’s creative spirit. “I like how the Fine Arts Fiesta brings out the artistic side,” he shared. “Because it hides sometimes and it should be brought out.” Krupa’s caricature tent sits cozily between a pottery vendor and Zenchaser Bonsai.
Art and Community
Established in 1956 by Annette Evans, the Fine Arts Fiesta aims to nurture and celebrate local artistic talents. Ann Saxton, the board president, explained, “She had traveled to many artist-friendly cities in Europe, and they would have open-air festivals. She wanted to bring that same type of event here to the Wyoming Valley, and Public Square was the perfect venue for it.”
Featuring a juried art exhibit, the festival is surrounded by food and craft vendors, with lively performances energizing the main stage. Saxton remarked on the growth of the event: “It started as a small gathering right here on Public Square. And we’ve just grown by leaps and bounds.”
New attractions include a modern art walk, inspired by Evans’ educational vision. Darlene Smith, a board member, noted, “[Evans] thought about it as an educational experience. This year we have 15 exhibits on the square … all of them from the modern era.”
Encouraging young artists, Sarah Borland leads the children’s art workshop. “We have a puppet show reading hour and I have my children’s art workshop which provides nine different art projects based on famous artists for children to express themselves and learn a little bit about art history.”

Live Entertainment
David Kerr, a board member, emphasizes the festival’s dynamic performances: “We have a full slate of great musical acts, dance acts and theater on the main stage.” Among the highlights is the Phil Giordano Jazz Orchestra, celebrating the event’s milestone with ’70 Decades of Jazz.’
Local talent also shines with performances by the Wilkes-Barre Academy Glee Club, Mt. Zion Mass Choir, and the Wyoming Valley Barbershop Harmony Chorus. For a comprehensive schedule of the weekend’s performances, visit the Fine Arts Fiesta website.
