A Guilty Plea in the Apalachee High School Shooting Case
In a Barrow County courtroom, 16-year-old Colt Gray admitted guilt to 55 charges stemming from the tragic Apalachee High School shooting. As he entered his plea, Judge Nicholas Primm ensured Gray was aware of the gravity of his decision.
Judge Primm emphasized, “You understand the decision to plead guilty has to be voluntary on your part? No one can force you to enter a guilty plea, there’s an absolute right to a jury trial.” To this, Gray responded affirmatively, “Yes sir.”
The shooting on September 4, 2024, resulted in four fatalities and nine injuries. Gray faced charges including murder, aggravated assault, and cruelty to children. During the proceedings, the victims’ families voiced their grief and anger.
Alanna Schermerhorn Wallace, sister of Mason Schermerhorn, one of the victims, conveyed her heartbreak, stating, “September 4 was not just the day I lost my brother; it was the day I lost the life that I knew before. It was the day my sense of safety and my ability to see the world the same, and the future I imagined with Mason were taken from me.”
In a pointed address to Gray, Alanna remarked, “You will always be remembered as a coward, a psychopath, a freak because of what you decide to do, but the victims Cristina Irimie, Richard Aspinwall, Christian Angulo, and Mason Schermerhorn will be remembered because of the people they were.”
Gray now faces the possibility of life imprisonment, with a judge set to determine his parole eligibility. In a related development, Gray’s father, Colin Gray, was found guilty of purchasing the firearm used in the shooting and is slated for sentencing on July 30.
