Downtown Athens Adopts New Parking System Amid Vandalism Concerns
In a move aimed at enhancing efficiency, the Athens Downtown Development Authority (ADDA) has transitioned from solar-powered parking meters to the Parkmobile app for managing parking payments in downtown Athens. However, the change hasn’t been without challenges, as numerous signs displaying QR codes for the app have been vandalized.
The process for parking has been simplified for users who can now download the Parkmobile app by scanning QR codes displayed at each parking spot. Unfortunately, these QR code signs have become targets for vandalism, prompting an investigation by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department (ACCPD).
The ACCPD has reported having active warrants for two individuals suspected of criminal trespassing and damaging government property in connection with the sign vandalism. Both charges are classified as felonies, though no arrests have been made to date.
David Lynn, the director of planning and outreach for the ADDA, discussed the rationale behind replacing the outdated meters last month. He stated, “We can no longer obtain parts, keep them maintained and we don’t have the labor that we used to. It’s a fairly labor intensive operation to maintain 800 parking meters that were powered by solar power.”
With the new system, parking spaces are available for payment up to two hours between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., and additional time can be purchased post-6 p.m. Users who prefer not to use the app can also make payments on Parkmobile’s website.
For individuals who wish to pay with cash or credit card, the ADDA recommends utilizing the College Avenue or Washington Street parking garages, where the first hour of parking is free.
