University of Georgia Opens Insect Zoo, Showcasing 30 Bug Species

New UGA Insect Zoo aims to open minds and ease fears

An Entomological Adventure Awaits at University of Georgia’s New Insect Zoo

As the new year approaches, the University of Georgia is gearing up to unveil an exciting new addition to its campus. In January, the university’s entomology department will open an insect zoo, promising a close-up experience with a variety of intriguing insects. Located in Cedar Street Building B, this unique zoo will feature approximately 30 different insect species, as shared by Dr. Kelly Carruthers, the professor overseeing the project.

The zoo aims to welcome visitors from the public. “Anyone really can come and visit, we would just ask that people schedule something with us,” noted Carruthers. Having her office conveniently situated next to the zoo, Dr. Carruthers looks forward to personally guiding guests through the exhibit.

Initially slated for a September 2025 launch, the zoo’s opening was delayed due to construction issues. Among its residents, the zoo boasts Ms. Bonnie, a 13-year-old rose hair tarantula, along with Madagascar hissing cockroaches, blue death-feigning beetles, and Peruvian walking sticks. Dr. Carruthers commented on the naming process, “I know we’re not super creative at naming. Like a lot of them get named based on how they look.”

Dr. Carruthers is also optimistic that the insect zoo will help people overcome their fear of bugs. “I used to be really afraid, and part of being less afraid was learning so much about them,” she shared. “And so all I want to do is share with people what little bits that I know, so they’ll be a little bit less afraid.”
