UNC Greensboro launches Spartan AI

UNCG Introduces Spartan AI: A New Hub for Artificial Intelligence Learning

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) has unveiled Spartan AI, a groundbreaking artificial intelligence platform designed to enhance educational experiences. This innovative tool offers users access to a variety of AI models, such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok.

As artificial intelligence technologies rapidly evolve, universities are adapting to integrate these advancements into their curricula. Wade Maki, a senior advisor at UNCG, is at the forefront of the university’s AI strategy, emphasizing the importance of equipping students with the skills to critically engage with AI in ways that meet employers’ expectations.

“This isn’t the first time we’ve had a new thing that was controversial,” Maki explains. “But as a university, it’s our responsibility to show students: here’s what’s out there, here’s how to be responsible with it, and here’s how we can help prepare you to really move up in your careers and life goals.”

Spartan AI has already attracted over 1,100 users in a matter of weeks, highlighting its immediate impact and appeal within the campus community. A unique aspect of this platform is its approach to data security; unlike many AI systems, it does not use users’ data and prompts for training the models. Instead, all data remains within the confines of campus administration, ensuring a safer and more controlled environment, according to Maki.

While Spartan AI opens new avenues for learning and exploration, the decision to incorporate it into coursework is left to the discretion of individual instructors. This flexibility allows educators to tailor the use of AI tools to suit their teaching objectives and student needs.
