UNCG Introduces Innovative Biotechnology Training Program to Meet Industry Demand
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is set to unveil a new initiative aimed at bridging the gap between education and the burgeoning biotechnology industry. The NC BioMISSION program, launching in January, seeks to equip students with the necessary skills to thrive in this dynamic field.
Biotechnology is at the forefront of converting organic materials into valuable products such as textiles, bioplastics, and fuels. As this industry is anticipated to generate around a million jobs nationwide by the decade’s end, there is a pressing need for a qualified workforce.
In response, UNCG collaborates closely with industry leaders to shape a curriculum that aligns with the demands of employers. UNCG’s Vice Chancellor for Research and Engagement, Dr. Sherine Obare, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “Rather than people at the university saying, ‘these are the skills people need,’ it will be the industry telling the university the skills they require in order to hire these individuals.”
NC BioMISSION will offer a hybrid learning experience, combining online courses with in-person sessions. The program is open to students of all majors, as well as adult learners and veterans, providing a versatile educational opportunity.
The initiative is backed by a $2 million grant from BioMADE, a manufacturing institute supported by the U.S. Department of Defense. This program is part of six educational and workforce development projects funded by the institute this year.
