University of Georgia Plans to Transform Legion Pool Complex, Sparking Public Debate
The University of Georgia (UGA) has announced ambitious plans to revamp the Legion Pool Complex, a move that has generated significant public interest. The university aims to replace the existing pool with a versatile green space, complete with an amphitheater and additional parking facilities, to better serve student needs.
According to UGA, the decision to propose these changes comes as the current pool sees limited use from the student body and incurs a financial loss of nearly $90,000 annually. The transformation is intended to create a more functional and economically viable environment for students.
In response to the announcement, a group known as Friends of Legion Pool has initiated an online petition urging the university to reconsider the demolition. The petition, which has garnered close to 2,000 signatures, advocates for extended pool hours instead of removing the facility entirely.
To address community concerns and gather feedback, UGA has scheduled a public hearing. This meeting will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Monday at the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center auditorium, located at 315 Riverbend Road, Athens, Georgia.
